What sells in a Recession ?
Lipstick, Spam and Guns ....

The US is in the middle of an economic slowdown, or recession. People are worried about money. They are not buying as many products. Some businesses are closing their doors for good. But the recession isn't all doom and gloom. Some products are flying off store shelves. Some businesses are doing better then ever.
People are buying comfort items. They are stocking un on cheap products. They are investing in do-it-yourself projects. They are paying to feel safe.

What sells during a recession ?
Chocolate, running shoes, wine and guns are all selling well. Gold coins, gardening seeds, lipstick and safes are also hot buys. What do these items have in commons ? They give people feelings of comfort or safety.


'Feel-Good' buys
In a recession, people stay home more. They focus on buying small things that will make them happy right away. 'Lipsticks and chocolate are small rewards that make you feel better', Paco Underhill said. He works for a business that watches shopping trends.
In hard times, people crave cheap comfort foods. That's what happened in the first three months of 2009. Kraft Foods reported double-digit growth in sales of macaroni and cheese. Hershey's candy profit soared 20 percent. Hormel Foods sold lots of chili, Spam and Dinty Moore stew. Wine sales rose, though most shoppers bought cheaper wines.


Good Deals vs. Luxury Goods

Thrifty buying patterns boost the profits of discounts stores. Currently, more people are shopping at Goodwill, Wal-Mart and Dollar Tree. Sales at the luxury chain Saks fell 32 percent last month.

Do it yourself
More people are paying to do things on their own. They are buying autoparts to make cheap repairs. They are buying fishing gear. Lots of shoppers plan to grow their own food. The number of home gardens is expected to soar by more than 40 percent compared to two years ago.
Some people are taking their safety into their own hands. They are buying guns in record numbers. Firearm sales recently rose 27.5 percent at Smith & Wesson. Some buyers are worried that the Obama administration will tighten gun laws. Others are responding to a sense of fear.

A major cost: Health
Recession is tough on the body. Worry can cause stomach upset. Sales of stomach medications are up. One Ohio dentist said he's seen more cases of teeth grinding lately.
However, people are paying to stay healthy and injury-free. They are buying plenty of running shoes and bike helmets.




More Americans cutting back
A 2008 poll by the Pew Research Center asked Americans, "Has the recent economy caused you to ...."

Cut back on holiday spending : 73%
Cut back on vacation spending : 62%
Change savings/investments : 60%
Eat out less often : 58%
Delay buying major home item : 45%
Delay home purchase/ improve : 44%
Delay buying new car : 39%
Adjust retirement plans : 32%
